THE BEGINNING, WHAT A GREAT PLACE TO START! FRAME IS FABRICATED FROM 2X3 TUBING
THE BODY IS FIBERGLASS AND IS VERY NICE. CHOPPED 32 GRILLE SHELL, TILT STEERING COLUMN. EVERYTHING IS MOUNTED AND FITS GOOD. TIME TO TAKE IT APART FOR PAINT!
SPRING BEHIND 2" DROP TUBE AXLE, DISC BRAKES, POWER RACK AND PINION STEERING, H.O. 302 WITH A.O.D. TRANSMISSION, FRAME IS Z'D 4" IN BACK WITH LEAF SPRINGS
CHANGE OF PLANS! WITH GAS OVER $4.00 I PUT A 230 CID 6 CYLINDER AND A 3 SPEED MANUAL IN IT!
CHECK OUT THE FRENCHED '59 CADILLAC TAIL LIGHTS AND '57 CHEVY DASH!
I'm finally back to work on this one! The dash is painted, the car is wired and I'm starting to build the top.
The dash is painted gloss black, the car was out in the rain so it looks kind of odd. I'm framing up the top with wood but it will be a fiberglass hardtop when it's done. The plywood is where the windows will be.
The top is all framed out! I'm very happy with the lines.
Here I've started with the chicken wire.
The windows are cut out and all the chicken wire is done. Time for the fiberglass!
The first coat of fiberglass is done! I think the rake and the lines of the top are great! I can't wait to get it finished and get some primer on it!

The fiberglass is done and I have a couple of coats of filler on it. A word of wisdom: WHEN YOU WORK WITH FIBERGLASS DON'T WASH YOUR UNDERWEAR WITH YOUR WORK CLOTHES !!
Here it is in primer and it'll probably stay that way for the summer. Next I'm going to fabricate a 3 piece hood out of steel.
The hood is done. I hinged it so it can be opened from either side. Next I have to get the seat belts in and get it ready for the interior shop.
WE DROPPED IT OFF TO GET THE INTERIOR DONE ON FRIDAY NIGHT MAY 1.
THE INTERIOR IS DONE! I JUST PICKED IT UP TONIGHT MAY 9.
MADDI SAYS IT'S DONE AND IT'S TIME FOR CRUISING! MAYBE WE'LL PAINT IT NEXT WINTER, BUT SHE LIKES IT JUST THE WAY IT IS!
OK, SO I GUESS I'M NOT VERY SMART. I'VE STARTED COLLECTING PARTS FOR THE NEXT ONE ALREADY! I HAVE A COUPLE OF ENGINE / TRANSMISSION CHOICES. I HAVE AN ALUMINUM HEAD 327, TUNNEL RAM AND MUNCIE 4 SPEED OR AN ALL ALUMINUM BUICK 215 WITH AN AUTOMATIC MAYBE I SHOULD BUILD 2 MORE......... OF COURSE I HAVE A COUPLE OF 283'S, A COUPLE 350'S A FUEL INJECTED 3.8 V8 , 9 TURBO 400'S, 3 TURBO 350'S AND A 4L60E MAYBE I SHOULD BUILD A FEW MORE........
I worked from 7 am until 10 pm Thursday and from 7 am Friday until 4:30 am Saturday to finish the top and get some windows in it. Then Maddi came running in to wake me at 7 am so we could get to the Hunnert Car Pileup !
HERE'S MADDI WITH HER PRIDE AND JOY! I'VE DRIVEN IT TO PICK HER UP FROM SCHOOL, TO WORK, TO THE STORE, TO THE BANK.....JUST LIKE A REAL CAR! WE DRIVE IT EVERYWHERE AND THE MORE WE DRIVE THE MORE FUN IT IS! MADDI SAID IT'S AS MUCH FUN AS THE OLD DOUBLE ZERO.......
The side windows were a little tricky, I wanted to be able to open them. I started by carving out foam board.
I carved out the inside so I could put some tracks for the windows to slide in.
I installed aluminum tracks for the windows to slide in.
I wrapped the foam in fiberglass. You can see where I had to cut slots in the bottom to form it to the shape of the door.
Here it is installed for a trial fit. You can see the filler pieces I made between the windshield and side window also.
The '57 Chevy is coming along so I had to give it back the chrome reverse wheels I borrowed from it. I bought some nice tall tires for the rear.
I've got almost 2000 miles on it! I'm getting between 26 and 30 mpg. The car is a blast to drive! It'll go down the highway at 75 mph all day long. I've had a couple of 100 mph blasts and it's just as stable as it is at 30 mph. There is only a couple things I want to change, I need to take a leaf out of the rear springs and I need to lay the front axle back about 4 degrees more. I'll make some changes on the next one, I'm going to cut the car in half at the doors and stretch it a few inches so it's easier to get in and out of, if I build another top I'll chop it a little more and I'll use coil overs in the rear instead of leaf springs. All in all I'm very happy with the car, I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere!
